Loves the team, hates the system. Planning an exit but wants to do it properly.

The overwhelmed middle manager
@first_in_the_room · 37
Thrown into management without the training or support. Doesn't want to mess it up.
The reason I chose to build a career in HR is because I was mistreated at work. I got my first role after graduation and was knocked back in a way I didn't see coming. That experience, in a very roundabout series of events, led me into the one profession I thought I could do — that would stop this kind of experience from happening to someone else.
That was a decade ago. More recently, I decided I was ready to bear it all on the internet and help as many people as possible. The response still blows my mind.
Over 33,000 followers, countless comments, 1:1s with paying customers — I couldn't believe how much people trusted me?!?! But I still couldn't get to every DM. And that's when I realised that helping people with real intention requires a different approach.
I know the struggle. I've lived it. I've had the terrible manager and the passive HR. I've been bullied, had my mental health dragged through the ruins — but I've also overcome the system on more than one occasion. Because I've spent over a decade studying it.
I believe the workplace has great potential to do right by people. But if they opt not to, accountability is the next best option. I'm un-gatekeeping everything I know for a community of human beings that deserve a level playing field.

Here's what people had to say:
“This lady knows her stuff! Already I feel a lot better and more confident about my knowledge of my rights etc.”
“I was dealing with a shock settlement at work. I was referred to Des and her HR services. I feel this situation was dealt with the perfect balance of empathy, professionalism and informed advice. After working with Desola she created a document that helped me receive a fair conclusion with my employer. Thank you Des — you're the best.”
